Paperback Perusalings

miradaws

Mark Pilkington has penned a highly interesting, mildly amusing study of 60 years of Ufology entitled Mirage Men. The central thesis, essentially, is that a variety of American agencies have quite actively fostered and encouraged the mythos of flying saucery as a handy cover for the development ant testing of experimental craft and as an unusual conduit for espionage. Pilkington carefully reinterprets most of the main historical ‘occurrences’ showing how key players have been closely linked to Psyops groups started in WW2 and how their disinformation was spread to focus and refocus the attention of the curious and/or nutty. A remarkably lucid, rather convincing read that’s only slightly mired by the author’s occasional dips into credulousness.

A Time before Genesis is a po-faced little pot boiler that weaves millenarian ramblings into some batshit global demonic/alien conspiracy capering, which, given it was written by the late comedian Les Dawson, really is quite a surprise. The plot is pretty standard stuff with a journalist stumbling into the murky mire but finding respite with a motley band of Crusaders fight together to thwart the evil that pervades the modern world. The writing is fairly terrible, characters paper thin and the plot well, it’s at least as barmy as it is derivative though it does have a nicely downbeat ending. I’m left wondering sadly if the late, great comic was a closet loon, a frustrated author or just trying to cash in on his renown, all in all a puzzling curio that probably isn’t worth the effort in hunting out.

Powerless Paranormals

redhere
Red Lights is a starry thriller about psychics and sceptics that, despite the classy production values, has little original to say about either and isn't particularly thrilling. Cillian and Sigourney play a pair of sceptical paranormal investigators who debunk about exposing charlatans and the deluded but when a once-famous medium, played by De Niro, rolls back into town things get all serious and they're faced with someone with seemingly genuine powers. It's well acted, nicely shot and there's a surprisingly realistic representation of the work of parapsychologists but that's all thrown away by a denouement of unabashed mumbo jumbo.

Clint's Hereafter, on the other hand, takes on a more traditionally dim-witted perspective on the paranormal and is just as unsatisfying. Matt Damon leads the cast playing a reluctant medium who slowly ties the disparate threads of the story together into one giant mawkish, internationally-flavoured lump of schmaltz. Eastwood can make decent films and though it looks nice and the characterisation/script are of a reasonable standard I found the plot is too earnest, too po-faced that I almost fell asleep twice. One for the true believers only.

Dark Dabbler Docs

Maya Deren’s hypnotic footage is the basis for the documentary Divine Horsemen about Haitian Voodoo.

Interesting if amusingly muddled BBC documentary about English Witchcraft circa 1971.

A surprisingly even handed but brief documentary about the life of Aleister Crowley.

Good old Ken, ye ken

Ken Russell's The Devils is a gleefully blasphemous film about the strange happenings in the Loudun nunnery of the 17th century based on the book by Aldous Huxley. When perfidious Cardinal Richelieu decides to destroy the fortified town of Loudon a rebel priest Grandier, played with gusto by Ollie Reed, stands in his path. After tupping some local lass he provokes the ire of the loony, hunchback boss-nun played by Vanessa Redgrave, she calls in the Inquisitors and the holy shit really hits the fan. Russell doesn't pull his punches with lavish sets, giddy costumery, mass nudity and bonkers dream/vision sequences and he even manages to procure decent performances from everyone despite the madness. All in all I quite enjoyed rewatching it, it's a finely made, committed film that's more tragic than I remembered and it's a terrible shame it's been overshadowed by the inevitable the sex/blasphemy controversy.

The Lair of the White Worm
was clearly made on a much lower budget than The Devils and even Ken's inventiveness couldn't patch up the cracks that scupper this foray into English folklore. An archaeologist uncovers a peculiar skull on a small farm dig near the fabled lair of the Lambton Worm and when the reclusive, predatory Lady Marsh arrives back the town begins to lose a few more residents. Starring Hugh Grant, Peter Capaldi and a delicious Amanda Donohue this could have been something decent but the ropey script and rubbishy acting constantly deflate any mystery or tension and it limps along to a ridiculous bagpipe based finale.

Anomalousness

Is this a structure on the surface of Mars? according to one chap yes, according to actual scientists no. Just a glitch in the imaging software apparently.

Here's a nice list of ten cryptids that turned out to be real.

Su Kong Tai Din
, was left to die in the forest but was adopted by a Shaolin monk and became a tremendous fighter - oh and he also suffered from hypertrichosis, ie looked like teen wolf - movie please. HumanMarvels.
Australia has "lost" it's UFO files - probably just a jape to wind up the tinfoil hatters though.

An interesting but weird article about the Black Knight satellite (an object purportedly in a polar orbit) and the author PKD.

Some poor sods died when the bear they ran over when straight through the front and back windows.

Half witted German Catholics have been offering homeopathic treatments to combat homosexuality.

The survivors of the Jolpin hurricane now have to contend with a deadly fungus.

The persistent anomalous Hum is back - this time winding up locals in some County Durham village. Telegraph.

White wedding for the local woman who has the world's most piercings (over 6000). Gives me some hope.

Dunce, Dunce, Dunce

In 1931 the New York Times asked some famous white folks what they thought America would be like in 2011 and got some interesting answers so I decided to ask the mighty webtubes a similar question and here's some of the answers..

May 21st is the date of the Rapture according to Harold Camping. Must remember to repent/convert May 20th.

Obama is going to start spilling about our E.T./A.L.F chums some time in the Spring.

The Iranian Bushehr facility will get an October surprise nuke strike according to someone with a penchant for dead prophets.

Among Craig Hamilton Parker's ball gazing results is the prediction that Macca & Yono are going to do a record and there will be a big California Quake - doesnt mention if both events will coincide so fingers crossed.

Mullenite seems pretty confident that the 7th Seal will be opened on Sept 22nd and it'll be heralded by Orion going super nova.

Michael McClellan has a lot of prophecies for 2011, handy that, anyways in May apparently there's going to be a mass culling of Nuns in France and in December Planet X will cause a massive quake in Oz.

The big J.C. will be back soon, touching down on Sat 14th of May at precisely 9:32am, so says Jonathon Selby

Alamongordo whatever that is reckons Egyptian President Mubarak will meet his maker this year but then he's also predicting the classic WW3 with China, Russia or maybe Iran.

The Scott's are sure there'll be a global shift in human consciousness midwifed by ancient alien guardians - I think.

I can't make head nor tail out of this person's biblical 'thesis' but it does have some helpful diagrams, mentions psychokinetic weather control, WW3 and thinks 2011 will see the rise of the Antichrist Putin. I'm not convinced mainly cause I'm sure the Great Beast would do a better job of Blueberry Hill.

Heavens Above

Scots perceive giant Toblerone UFO in the sky, probably my favourite UFO story in an age courtesy of the BBC. I suppose it's pretty strong evidence for the theory that sightings are some sort of psychological projection, I mean a chocolate bar for fooks surely could only be topped by a shimmering bottle of Bucky.

From the same data release is the story of Michael Howard MP's house being buzzed by UFO's with a number of witness, drop off or pick up? not sure anyways Icke-ists will be frothing at such details. thanks to the Grindaau.

If you're interested there's a nice article on Forgetomori bout the psychosocial evolution of the concept of UFO's from Nazi secret weapons to Alien craft. Not entirely convinced by the source article but it's a interesting line on the phenomenon should make good movie though, with Iron Sky looming.

Guidestones of the wasteland

Odd American monument built to guide the survivors of the coming apocalypso. Seems it's been attracting some vandalism from religious nuts suspicious of the Rosicrucian gent who paid for it all anonymously back in the 80's. Original article on Wired, via Strange A

Guff just more guff

Hats off to Metzger's blog, not only does it include a little heads up to Brooker but he also includes this clip in some article about some new crazed military tazer with a 200ft range. I like watching their cop riverdance legs.

Weird, Wiki list Metzger as British but he's got an Merican accent I'm sure, he presented those DisinfoTV things, anyways maybe he is a small islander like the rest of us as he's also posting on Bonfire night. Here's a nice clip of Metzger interviewing R.A.W.

Sllight spattering

Ronson has taken over part of the Guardian site to promote the Clooney film based on his book, there's a nice little article from Pilkington of Strange Attractor fame.

Suppose should link this poll result about filesharers, not that Mandy will pay the slightest attention, the three-strikes wagon will rumble on.

Superman helps beat the KKK for real? weird but wonderful. Via I09.

Even Guido seems to see the stupidity of our current drug policies and the sacking of Nutt.

Guff

Interesting post on Dangerous Minds about unexplained tunnels in Tokyo, I'm a sucker for a bit of underground nonsense.

Wired has a nice post on those brave geeks fighting the dangerous Hubbard-loving Church across the interweb.

Interesting story on Private Eye re Megrahi, this story has slipped from the TV news lately and here's another that's seemingly just dropped away. I don't understand why the Beeb isn't all over this story like a rash, it's pretty clear where Mini-Murdoch stands so they could at least start throwing some punches.

Work can wait

There's a sweet mutant on io9 today, pictured above, I'm sure it'd freak most peoples out if they found it climbing their bedroom wall.

Clue is actually a funny film, which as it's based on Cluedo was quite a surprise, however I can't imagine the film of Battleships will be anything other than shite. And surely Ridley Scott directing a film based on Monoply is just a hoax ? Tired old Hollywood will be making films based on sweets next.

Glenn Beck does Kermit impression - has probably the most punchable face ever.

Someone's got a petition going to convince Lord Mandy to drop his dingbat idea about banning filesharers, via BoingBoing. Shame it won't work but worth a few minutes to sign up though.

Bit of this bit of that

Avoid Angel of Death - a dumb action film which gives other dumb action movies a bad name, the action is fine but the script is terrible and acting even worse.

Nice little post on BoingBoing about the recently announced policy of cutting off file sharers here in the UK. Turns out their figure of 7 million filesharers is based on a sample of 136 peeps - oh dear they really should try and do their homework better. Time to join the Pirate Party ? oh well at least some artists have some sense.

Mmm and I've been thinking that the whole crop circle thing was pretty much explained away as hoaxes some time ago but there's an interesting article on Dangerous Minds about some historical precedents for the phenomenon.

odds nd sods

I love me some Panspermia/exogenesis hypotheses so great news today that NASA found some amino acids in the cloud of the Wild 2 comet. Thanks to io9 for the link.

Wow - I was just telling my non-gamer friend about the RROD problem last night and I said it was about 25%. I love my ps3 but I'm no troll I just think it's bad for everyone if a company is successful even though they're selling a defective profit. I can't imagine Microsoft will be too bothered about testing their next console.

Nice little roundup of Fortean phenomenon on Cracked.com including a few like the Naga fireballs I hadn't even heard of.

Here's a link to the trailer for the Grant Morrison scifi retelling of the Mahabarat. Looks pretty cool.

Little bit of Forteana

Well first there was this, slightly nauseating gunk, that had peeps baffled for a bit and now there's this nasty gloop.

Tardigrades are cool mini-critters, here's a cool bit from io9 bout other extremophiles.

And via the mighty Fortean Times here's an interesting article about some extensive caves uncovered at Easter Island.
